Leather belt with filigree design
Learn how to quickly refine a simple leather belt.
Preparation
Material required
- Belt made of cowhide leather (approx. 3.5mm thick, 38mm wide, total length incl. belt buckle approx. 104cm)
- Cover material for the laser
Machine used
- Speedy 400 flexx
- 120 watts
- 2" lens
- Nozzle with small hole diameter
- Aluminium slat cutting table
Note: Depending on the length of the belt, you can use another machine from the Speedy laser engraver series for this application.
Step by step
Step 1: Design
Feel free to use our template that we have provided or, alternatively, you can create your own unique design. Send the job to the laser machine using the below settings:
Print settings:
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Standard | 500dpi | none |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Ordered Dithering | Optimised geometries, inner geometries first |
Step 2: Laser process
The parameters will vary depending on the laser machine you are using and the available laser power.
Place the belt on the aluminium grid table with the belt buckle on the right side. The aluminium grid assists with the alignment of material. In order to optimise the engraving result, we recommend placing the belt parallel to the upper edge at a distance of approximately 1cm. It is important that you make sure the leather is straight.
Finally, cover the remaining working area in order to create a strong vacuum.
Laser parameters:
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
black | Engrave CO2 | 50 | 100 | 500dpi |
red | Cut CO2 | 75 | 1.0 | 1000 Hz |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Direction | Advanced | Path planning |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | on | +2 | Top down | High quality | - |
1 | on | -1 | - | - | Accuracy |
Step 3: Assembly
Once complete, remove the belt from the laser machine. Use a lightly moistened cloth to clean the surface of the leather.
Inspiration
Seeing as though leather is a natural product, this makes it an ideal material for laser engraving and cutting. You can alter the present design of the belt by adjusting the greyscale and engraving parameters. By experimenting with different colours and types of leather, you can also achieve unique and different results.
