Which laser machine is suitable for plastics processing?
Plastics processors usually cut engineering plastics as components for mechanical and plant engineering, automotive & aerospace or the construction industry.
Basic materials include:
- unprinted sheets or foils made of different plastics (typically polypropylene, polystyrene, ABS, polycarbonate),
- sometimes self-adhesive on carrier foil
- foam materials
When cutting engineering plastics, the user has the choice of processing with a laser, saw, milling machine or water jet cutter.
Advantages of the laser when cutting engineering plastics
Laser cutting is a contactless process. This enables a stable process without tool wear and little material loss. As no pressure is exerted on the plastic sheets and foils, very fine details of the cutting geometry can be implemented.
In contrast to sawing, laser cutting is a digital, flexible process that enables free design. When cutting the sheet material with the milling machine, chips are produced. These can scratch the material. No chips are produced during laser processing, so a higher cutting speed can be selected. The advantage of the laser when cutting engineering plastics in contrast to the water jet cutter: The material doesn’t get wet. Kiss-cut applications – i.e. cutting the cover foil without touching the carrier foil – are also possible. If you want to compare laser cutting with knife cutting, the laser is the right choice for precise kiss cuts. Further advantages are the simultaneous drilling of holes in one operation and the feasibility of the finest geometries.
