- 1 Aluminum tag in silver with ball chain
- Glue dots, double-sided adhesive tape or acrylic glue
Laser machine used
- Speedy 360
- 100 Watt
- 2" lens
- Vacuum table with acrylic laser cutting grid for TroGlass
- Aluminum cutting grid or honeycomb cutting table for laser cutting wood
Any Speedy laser engraving machine or SP laser cutting machine can be used to create this sample.
Important information
- In our example we did not use glue to hold the pieces together, thus it is important to pay special attention to kerf. If necessary, you can cut a small geometry with the parameters you want to use on the material and measure the dimension to test the kerf. You can then adapt the kerf accordingly if required.
- The laser parameters required will differ depending on the laser machine you use and the available power.
Step by step
Material 1: Wood
Import our design into your preferred graphic program, changing it to suit your requirements. For our trophy we chose seven pillars, but you can adapt the number to your customers' requirements or personal taste.
1. Print settings
Start by cutting the wood. Send the job to the laser using the following settings:
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Standard | 500 dpi | none |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | Optimised geometries, inner geometries first |
2. Laser process and laser parameters wood
Put the wood onto the laser machine bed and activate the vacuum to compensate for eventual unevenness.
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
red | Cut CO2 | 100 | 0.8 | 1000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | on | - | - |
Info:
For this we used the standard laser parameters for solid wood walnut
Material 2: Acrylic 20 mm
The next step is to create the base as well as the upper connectors. In this sample we used 20 mm acrylic. Depending on your requirements you can use a thinner acrylic. Prior to laser cutting the acrylic components measure the thickness of the wood components before you cut the acrylic pieces. This allows you to adapt the notches if necessary.
1. Print settings
Send the job to your laser using following settings:
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Standard | 500 dpi | none |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | Optimised geometries, inner geometries first |
2. Laser process and laser parameters Acrylic 20 mm
For laser cutting acrylic we used a SP1500 with 400 watt laser power and the 5" lens. Focus 4 mm into the material.
The slot in the upper connector is used to insert the ball chain. You can adapt the laser engraving depth if necessary.
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Spped (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
red | Cut CO2 | 35 | 0.2 | 2000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | on | 4 mm | - |
Tip:
For quicker processing you can reduce the material thickness by up to 10 mm and use a Speedy laser machine for laser cutting. Use the standard material parameters which are optimised for quality and a 2.5” lens.
Info:
Use the standard TroGlass Clear 20 mm laser parameters when laser cutting the pieces
Material 3: TroGlass Metallic
The middle part can be made out of any TroGlass materials or colours. In this stage you can add a logo for personalisation if desired.
1. Print settings
Send the file to your laser using following settings:
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Standard | 500 dpi | none |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | Optimised geometries, inner geometries first |
2. Laser process and laser parameters TroGlass (Metallic)
Depending on how you want to fix the TroGlass material on the 20 mm base, you can put some double-sided adhesive foil on it prior to laser cutting.
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
red | Cut CO2 | 40 | 0.2 | 5000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | on | - | - |
Info:
We used the standard laser parameters for TroGlass optimised for quality.
Material 4: Acrylic 5 mm
As with the prior materials measure the thickness of the wood and adapt the kerf if necessary.
1. Print settings
Send the job to the laser.
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Standard | 500 dpi | none |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | Optimised geometries, inner geometries first |
2. Laser process and laser parameters Acrylic 5 mm
Put the acrylic on the acrylic laser cutting grid table.
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
red | Cut CO2 | 85 | 0.2 | 20000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | on | -1.5 mm | - |
Info:
We used the standard quality parameters for TroGlass Clear 5 mm.
Material 5: Aluminum tag
The aluminum tag is where the person to be honoured will have their name laser engraved. For variety you can use different shaped and coloured tags or even create your own from different materials such as TroLase or AlumaMark.
1. Print settings
Send the job to your laser
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Standard | 500 dpi | none |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | - |
2. Laser process and laser parameters aluminium tag
Position the tag onto the laser bed using the 1.5" lens to show the fine details. Laser parameters vary depending on the laser machine used and its available power. For our sample we used a SpeedMarker with MOPA laser for the black marking on the back.
Tipp:
For exact positioning of the graphic on the work piece, you can use a template or the simple positioning aids of JobControl® software
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
black | Engrave CO2 | 10 | 20 | 500 |
Passses | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | on | - | High quality |
Assembly
Start assembling the trophy with the wood components, adding them to the upper connector. Before placing the final components, thread the ball chain with the tag attached and position the lock into the slot. Once completed put the lower parts of the wood element into the 5 mm acrylic. Mount the signage by fixing the elements with glue dots using the creased marks onto the TroGlass. Once completed tighten the screws. The final step is to glue the TroGlass onto the acrylic base.
Et Voilà – your trophy is ready.
To make the trophy stand out further we created a movable globe. Follow our step-by-step instructions to create one to add to your trophy.
