Customizing cutlery
In this tutorial, we show you how you can upgrade stainless steel cutlery using a laser. The annealing process keeps the surface intact and the pieces can be cleaned easily.
In the following tutorial, we will be showing you how to add a lovely, personal touch to your cutlery using a Trotec laser machine. The annealing process keeps the surface intact, and the pieces will always be able to be cleaned easily.
Preparation
You Will Need
- Stainless Steel Cutlery
- Lego blocks - to position the items in the machine
Machine Used
- Speedy 360 flexx
- 30 Watt fiber laser
- 2.85" lens
- Vacuum Table
You can use any machine from the Speedy flexx laser engraver series to create this sample.
Important
When positioning the material into the machine, try to ensure that the surface is as flat as possible, and parallel to the table.
Step by step
Step 1: Design
Import our template or have a go at creating your own design. Then, send the job to your laser machine using the following printer driver settings:
Printer Driver Settings:
Process Mode | Resolution | Cut Line |
---|---|---|
Standard | 1000 dpi | None |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | - |
Step 2: Laser Process
Determine and set your parameters. Please note that these parameters can differ depending on the laser machine used and the available laser power.
TIP:
We decided to use Lego bricks to help secure the cutlery inside the machine. They are incredibly practical if you need to adhere to different heights or define different positions. If you don’t have any Legos, you can use something like Blue Tack instead.
LASER PARAMETERS: ANNEALING
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
Black | Engraving FLP | 90 | 3 | 30000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | ON | +2mm | - |
Step 3: Post-Processing
The best part? There is no necessary post-processing! The cutlery will remain dishwasher proof after being processed. So, if you feel that it needs a quick clean, place all your spoons, forks and knives in the dishwasher the same way you usually would.
