Laser engraved
Mirror Glass
Your creativity knows no bounds: Even mirrors can become unique decorative elements with laser engraving.
Preparation
Materials required
- Mirror - any size (remember to adapt the design depending on size)
- Acrylic lacqueur
Trotec laser machine used
- Speedy 100 flexx - fiber laser
- 30 watts
Tip
Use the 2.85 inch flexx lens or the 3.2 inch fiber lens for engraving the glass.
Step by step
Step 1: Preparation
The first step is to load your mirror onto the laser machine's bed. You can use the aluminium table or the honeycomb table for this tutorial. Make sure the mirror is the right way prior to processing.
After that you can engrave the mirror reflective side up side through the glass with your desired pattern. Glass does not react to the fiber laser, so only the mirror layer is removed when laser engraving. The glass itself is not scratched because it reacts only to the wavelength of the CO₂ laser source.
Step 2: Laser settings
Engraving:
Power: 100 %, speed: 10 %, frequency: 1000 ppi
Step 3: Cleaning
Cleaning your mirror is an easy process as the erosion and dust produced when laser engraving lands on the table under the mirror and not onto the mirror itself.
Step 4: Painting
The final stage of this tutorial is to paint the acrylic lacquer onto the back of the mirror. Thanks to the mirror layer being removed during laser engraving the engraved area is now transparent, making the painted colours remain bright and intense thanks to the glass transparency.
