Glass lantern
Lanterns make beautiful and modern table decorations for weddings. In the following tutorial, we will give you step-by-step instructions on how to laser engrave individual wedding decorations. This lantern can also be engraved for many other occasions such as Christmas or birthdays.
Preparation
Used material
- Glass lantern, circular, 4 x 4 x 4 in
- Candle, height about 3 in., diameter about 2.5 in.
- Paper towel
Machine used
- Laser engraver Speedy 400
- 120 Watt
- 2" lens
- vacuum table
You can also produce this pattern with another machine from the Speedy laser engraver series.
Tips
For this lantern we have chosen to engrave using damp paper towel. This prevents the glass from splintering during engraving.
To prepare the glass, you will need a sheet of paper towel, some water and a sponge or spray bottle. Place a single, thin layer of paper towel on the spot where you want to engrave the lantern and moisten it with the sponge or spray bottle. For best results, make sure that the paper towel does not include any folds or air bubbles.
Step by step
Step 1: Import/create laser template
Create your own design or use our free template. Now send the job to the laser with the settings below.
Print settings
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Standard | 500dpi | none |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Color | Optimized Geometries |
Step 2: Laser process
The next step is to determine parameter settings. Our suggested parameters vary depending on the laser machine used and the available laser power. In order to prevent early drying of the kitchen paper, we recommend deactivating the vacuum table blower during the engraving process.
Position the lantern on the vacuum table. Place a sheet of paper under the glass to prevent scratches on the glass. For an optimal engraving result, the surface to be engraved must have an even height. If the wind light has a beveled shape, you can compensate for any differences in height.
Laser parameters:
Color | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
black | Engrave CO2 | 90 | 100 | 500 ppi |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Direction | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Off | - | Top down | - |
Step 3: Finishing
After the engraving process, remove the glass from the laser. Now carefully clean the engraved surface with a damp cloth.
Finally, place the candle in the lantern.
Inspiration
A dark, strong color of the candle is the best way to accentuate the engraving.
The lantern is also very well suited as a supplement for special table decorations (e.g. weddings, christenings, birthdays, company parties ...).
